The domestic work
sector : a world of
opportunities !

The sector of individual employer and domestic work includes professionals like personal carers, childminders, childcare providers, and family assistants. These professionals, hired directly by individuals, support families, young children, the elderly, and people with disabilities or dependencies in their homes.

Did you know ?

There are two models of home employment: direct employment and agency-mediated employment. In direct employment, there's no intermediary between the individual employer and the employee. In agency-mediated employment, the individual employer receives advice and support from an organization in their role as an employer for various administrative tasks related to the employment relationship: candidate searches, recruitment and hiring, payroll, and sometimes even handling of income tax withholding. The individual employer retains overall responsibility as the employer of their worker.

A human-centered and unique sector

The sector embodies a responsible and civic-minded employment model that offers practical and supportive solutions for the essential needs of French citizens at home. Its uniqueness lies in the personal employment relationships, which carry a significant human dimension. Supporting vulnerable people or young children and working in people's homes require specific qualities and skills.

Marie Béatrice Levaux
Chairwoman of the National Joint Council for Social Dialogue (CNPDS)

We are an organized civil society, arguably the most advanced. Fifteen million French people are impacted by what we do. We can overcome the obstacles. Citizens set the direction for our sector. For us, taking action means challenging preconceptions. Our sector has grown by breaking through barriers. We spent nearly 30 years explaining that it was possible. We've proven it. Now we're ready to take it to the next level.

A Sector with Job Opportunities

This is a job-creating sector with a promising future. Nearly 800,000 jobs will be available in the sector by 2030, due to the retirement of current employees and the aging population, which will create additional needs for in-home support. Job opportunities are plentiful, as are career prospects. The professional pathway is structured with certifications that allow for skill development, specialization, career advancement, or transitioning within the sector.

A dynamic sector

The individual employer and domestic work sector invests not only in professionalizing its occupations but also in other employee-friendly initiatives including insurance, retirement plans, social and cultural activities. Similar to a CSE (Social and Economic Committee) representing employees in companies, the sector offers a portal for social and leisure activities showcasing a range of enticing options throughout the year.

A COMMITTED SECTOR

Through partnerships, national and local events, and innovative programs, the sector’s key players work tirelessly to raise awareness, develop, structure, and make the sector attractive to society, public authorities, families, and professionals themselves. Over the years, the sector has demonstrated its ability to tackle issues head-on and has often pioneered its own path to best support both individual employers and employees.

Stéphane Fustec
Vice-President of the National Joint Council for Social Dialogue (CNPDS)

A collective agreement is crucial when entering a profession. I'm quite proud to have contributed to the sector's new collective agreement, effective since January 1, 2022, which is particularly innovative. It introduces new social rights, including the voluntary retirement bonus based on seniority in the sector, which is a major advancement. But negotiations don't stop there. This is the strength of the joint system that we’ve built together. One of our long-standing projects - health in the workplace - is about to come to fruition. If we don't write our own history, nobody will do it for us.

AN INNOVATIVE SECTOR

With initiatives like Carers' Centers (RAVie), Lab Migration for Domestic Work, , contribution to the overhaul of RPL through REVA (Recognize and Validate Experience), sector-specific career guidance and development consulting (COEPS) and work-study programs, the individual employer and domestic work sector continually strives for innovation.

Grounded in reality, the sector conducts ambitious, modern, and inclusive programs.
