of a personal carer

I’ve been a personal carer for 17 years. I take pride in helping elderly individuals stay in their own homes, despite their limited autonomy. It’s a human-centered, meaningful job that involves a lot of sharing and interaction: you give a lot, but you receive a lot too. I know my role is very important because I see these people daily, sometimes more often than their doctors or families. When issues arise, I can alert others quickly. In this job, you need to be attentive, a good listener, and well-trained; it’s not something you can improvise. We work with vulnerable people, so there’s no room for overlooking important details."

I take my hat off to all of those who've chosen to be personal carers, especially mine. It's really not easy to go into strangers' homes, who may be more or less friendly, to create bonds with them, and be there for them. For me, it’s made a huge difference in my life, and I’m grateful that I can continue living in my own home. Three times a week, I can go for a walk, which is essential for me: I get to see my neighborhood and the shopkeepers who know me well. I need this contact, and I could never do this alone!
